Khmer Language

Class Schedule: Every Sunday (unless class is canceled or there is a holiday) during the academic year, from 2:00-3:30pm.

Class levels: Beginner and Intermediate

Learning Outcomes by Level:

Beginner:

Know all or most of the consonants, vowels and numbers

Know and understand some daily conversational phrases

Intermediate:

Be able to read and write sentences.

Be able to comprehend and converse in daily basic conversation.

Class Expectations:

No phone usage and side conservations during class unless instructors allow for the lesson. Respect the instructors.

Supplies for class:

Paper, notebook

Pencil, pen

Eraser

Worksheets and class homework

Typical Class Structure:

1:50pm: Please arrive early to help set up tables and chairs if able.

2:00pm: Class starts, greet teachers and get into lesson.

3:30pm: Class ends, thank you and say goodbye to teachers.

There may be some quizzes or exams (not pass/fail basis) to occasionally assess the students’ learning so instructors can adjust lesson plans as needed.

Khmer Dance and Performing Arts

Class Schedule: Every Sunday (unless class is canceled or there is a holiday) during the academic year, from 3:30-5:00pm for all class levels. 5:00-6:00pm is time reserved for rehearsal or extra practice for older students as needed.

Dance teachers will assign students based on age group and skill level.

Practice Attire:

Round neck t-shirts

Practice Kben

No hoodies, hats

Hair tied up and away from face

Shirt - No V-neckline

Typical Class Structure:

3:00pm: Arrive and get dressed into practice attire

3:30pm: Start class, greet teachers, Sompeah Kru Ceremony (teacher respect ceremony), and ROBAM Motto.

3:40pm: Start stretches and practice Chha Banchos (Khmer Dance Fundamentals)

3:50pm: Break off into student groups for dances assigned by instructor

4:50pm: Get ready to end class, clean up, thank and say goodbye to teachers

5:00pm-6:00pm: Extra practice for older students and/or rehearsal as needed.

Rehearsal dates/times will be scheduled outside of class times as needed before performances.

For dance performances, we appreciate parents’ help with:

Help with hair, makeup, dressing for performances

Set up, transport props to and from performance location

Food and drinks

Volunteering for students’ rides or carpooling when needed

Fruits and Materials for Sompeah Kru:

Dance Practice: Coconut and asian banana, incense sticks, and white or yellow candle.

Dance Performance: Coconut, asian banana, and 3-5 pairs of high-growing fruits (for example, apples, oranges, mangos, dragonfruit, 1 bunch of grapes, 1 bunch logan, avocado), incense sticks, and white or yellow candle. Please ask dance instructors for any questions.
